The PHENIX experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider measured $$pi^0$$ and $$eta$$ mesons at midrapidity in U$$+$$U collisions at $$sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=192$$ GeV in a wide transverse momentum range. Measurements were performed in the $$pi^0(eta)rightarrowgammagamma$$ decay modes. A strong suppression of $$pi^0$$ and $$eta$$ meson production at high transverse momentum was observed in central U$$+$$U collisions relative to binary scaled $$p$$$$+$$$$p$$ results. Yields of $$pi^0$$ and $$eta$$ mesons measured in U$$+$$U collisions show similar suppression pattern to the ones measured in Au$$+$$Au collisions at $$sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$$ GeV for similar numbers of participant nucleons. The $$eta$$/$$pi^0$$ ratios do not show dependence on centrality or transverse momentum, and are consistent with previously measured values in hadron-hadron, hadron-nucleus, nucleus-nucleus, and $$e^+e^-$$ collisions.

The PHENIX collaboration presents first measurements of low-momentum (0.4 $$< p_T <$$ 3 GeV/$$c$$) direct-photon yields from Au$$+$$Au collisions at $$sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}$$ = 39 and 62.4 GeV. For both beam energies the direct-photon yields are substantially enhanced with respect to expectations from prompt processes, similar to the yields observed in Au$$+$$Au collisions at $$sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}$$ = 200. Analyzing the photon yield as a function of the experimental observable $$dN_{rm ch}/deta$$ reveals that the low-momentum ($$>$$1 GeV/$$c$$) direct-photon yield $$dN_{gamma}^{rm dir}/deta$$ is a smooth function of $$dN_{rm ch}/deta$$ and can be well described as proportional to $$(dN_{rm ch}/deta)^alpha$$ with $$alpha approx$$ 1.25. This new scaling behavior holds for a wide range of beam energies at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider and Large Hadron Collider, for centrality selected samples, as well as for different, $$A+A$$ collision systems. At a given beam energy the scaling also holds for high $$p_T$$ ($$>$$5 GeV/$$c$$) but when results from different collision energies are compared, an additional $$sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}$$-dependent multiplicative factor is needed to describe the integrated-direct-photon yield.

We present measurements of azimuthal correlations of charged hadron pairs in $$sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$$ GeV Au$$+$$Au collisions after subtracting an underlying event using a model that includes higher-order azimuthal anisotropy $$v_2$$, $$v_3$$, and $$v_4$$. After subtraction, the away-side ($$Deltaphisimpi)$$ of the highest transverse-momentum trigger ($$p_T > 4$$ GeV/$$c$$) correlations is suppressed compared to that of correlations measured in $$p$$$$+$$$$p$$ collisions. At the lowest associated particle $$p_T$$, the away-side shape and yield are modified. These observations are consistent with the scenario of radiative-jet energy loss. For the lowest-$$p_T$$ trigger correlations, an away-side yield exists and we explore the dependence of the shape of the away-side within the context of an underlying-event model. Correlations are also studied differentially versus event-plane angle $$Psi_n$$. The angular correlations show an asymmetry when selecting the sign of the trigger-particle azimuthal angle with respect to the $$Psi_2$$ event plane. This asymmetry and the measured suppression of the pair yield out of plane is consistent with a path-length-dependent energy loss. No $$Psi_3$$ dependence can be resolved within experimental uncertainties.

The PHENIX collaboration has measured high-$$p_T$$ dihadron correlations in $$p$$$$+$$$$p$$, $$p$$$$+$$Al, and $$p$$$$+$$Au collisions at $$sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$$ GeV. The correlations arise from inter- and intra-jet correlations and thus have sensitivity to nonperturbative effects in both the initial and final states. The distributions of $$p_{rm out}$$, the transverse momentum component of the associated hadron perpendicular to the trigger hadron, are sensitive to initial and final state transverse momenta. These distributions are measured multi-differentially as a function of $$x_E$$, the longitudinal momentum fraction of the associated hadron with respect to the trigger hadron. The near-side $$p_{rm out}$$ widths, sensitive to fragmentation transverse momentum, show no significant broadening between $$p$$$$+$$Au, $$p$$$$+$$Al, and $$p$$$$+$$$$p$$. The away-side nonperturbative $$p_{rm out}$$ widths are found to be broadened in $$p$$$$+$$Au when compared to $$p$$$$+$$$$p$$; however, there is no significant broadening in $$p$$$$+$$Al compared to $$p$$$$+$$$$p$$ collisions. The data also suggest that the away-side $$p_{rm out}$$ broadening is a function of $$N_{rm coll}$$, the number of binary nucleon-nucleon collisions, in the interaction. The potential implications of these results with regard to initial and final state transverse momentum broadening and energy loss of partons in a nucleus, among other nuclear effects, are discussed.

Experimental studies of the collisions of heavy nuclei at relativistic energies have established the properties of the quark-gluon plasma (QGP), a state of hot, dense nuclear matter in which quarks and gluons are not bound into hadrons. In this state, matter behaves as a nearly inviscid fluid that efficiently translates initial spatial anisotropies into correlated momentum anisotropies among the particles produced, creating a common velocity field pattern known as collective flow. In recent years, comparable momentum anisotropies have been measured in small-system proton-proton and proton-nucleus (p+A) collisions, despite expectations that the volume and lifetime of the medium produced would be too small to form a QGP. Here we report on the observation of elliptic and triangular flow patterns of charged particles produced in proton-gold (p+Au), deuteron-gold (d+Au) and helium-gold ($$^{3}$$He+Au) collisions at a nucleon-nucleon centre-of-mass energy $$sqrt{s_{{mathrm{NN}}}}$$ = 200 GeV. The unique combination of three distinct initial geometries and two flow patterns provides unprecedented model discrimination. Hydrodynamical models, which include the formation of a short-lived QGP droplet, provide the best simultaneous description of these measurements.

We present measurements of elliptic and triangular azimuthal anisotropy of charged particles detected at forward rapidity $$1 < |eta| < 3$$ in Au$$+$$Au collisions at $$sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$$ GeV, as a function of centrality. The multiparticle cumulant technique is used to obtain the elliptic flow coefficients $$v_2{2}$$, $$v_2{4}$$, $$v_2{6}$$, and $$v_2{8}$$, and triangular flow coefficients $$v_3{2}$$ and $$v_3{4}$$. Using the small-variance limit, we estimate the mean and variance of the event-by-event $$v_2$$ distribution from $$v_2{2}$$ and $$v_2{4}$$. In a complementary analysis, we also use a folding procedure to study the distributions of $$v_2$$ and $$v_3$$ directly, extracting both the mean and variance. Implications for initial geometrical fluctuations and their translation into the final state momentum distributions are discussed.

We have measured direct photons for $$p_T< 5~$$GeV/$$c$$ in minimum bias and 0% - 40% most central events at midrapidity for Cu$$+$$Cu collisions at $$sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$$ GeV. The $$e^{+}e^{-}$$ contribution from quasi-real direct virtual photons has been determined as an excess over the known hadronic contributions in the $$e^{+}e^{-}$$ mass distribution. A clear enhancement of photons over the binary scaled $$p$$$$+$$$$p$$ fit is observed for $$p_T < 4$$ GeV/$$c$$ in Cu$$+$$Cu data. The $$p_T$$ spectra are consistent with the Au$$+$$Au data covering a similar number of participants. The inverse slopes of the exponential fits to the excess after subtraction of the $$p$$$$+$$$$p$$ baseline are 285$$pm$$53(stat)$$pm$$57(syst)~MeV/$$c$$ and 333$$pm$$72(stat)$$pm$$45(syst)~MeV/$$c$$ for minimum bias and 0% - 40% most central events, respectively. The rapidity density, $$dN/dy$$, of photons demonstrates the same power law as a function of $$dN_{rm ch}/deta$$ observed in Au$$+$$Au at the same collision energy.

Production of $$pi^0$$ and $$eta$$ mesons has been measured at midrapidity in Cu$$+$$Au collisions at $$sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}$$=200 GeV. Measurements were performed in $$pi^0(eta)rightarrowgammagamma$$ decay channel in the 1(2)-20 GeV/$$c$$ transverse momentum range. A strong suppression is observed for $$pi^0$$ and $$eta$$ meson production at high transverse momentum in central Cu$$+$$Au collisions relative to the $$p$$$$+$$$$p$$ results scaled by the number of nucleon-nucleon collisions. In central collisions the suppression is similar to Au$$+$$Au with comparable nuclear overlap. The $$eta/pi^0$$ ratio measured as a function of transverse momentum is consistent with $$m_T$$-scaling parameterization down to $$p_T=$$2 GeV/$$c$$, its asymptotic value is constant and consistent with Au$$+$$Au and $$p$$$$+$$$$p$$ and does not show any significant dependence on collision centrality. Similar results were obtained in hadron-hadron, hadron-nucleus, and nucleus-nucleus collisions as well as in $$e^+e^-$$ collisions in a range of collision energies $$sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=$$ 3-1800 GeV. This suggests that the quark-gluon-plasma medium produced in Cu$$+$$Cu collisions either does not affect the jet fragmentation into light mesons or it affects the $$pi^0$$ and $$eta$$ the same way.

Asymmetric nuclear collisions of $$p$$+Al, $$p$$+Au, $$d$$+Au, and $$^{3}$$He+Au at $$sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}$$ = 200 GeV provide an excellent laboratory for understanding particle production, as well as exploring interactions among these particles after their initial creation in the collision. We present measurements of charged hadron production $$dN_{rm ch}/deta$$ in all such collision systems over a broad pseudorapidity range and as a function of collision multiplicity. A simple wounded quark model is remarkably successful at describing the full data set. We also measure the elliptic flow $$v_{2}$$ over a similarly broad pseudorapidity range. These measurements provide key constraints on models of particle emission and their translation into flow.

We present measurements of two-particle angular correlations between high-transverse-momentum ($$2<p_T<11$$ GeV/$$c$$) $$pi^0$$ observed at midrapidity ($$|eta|<0.35$$) and particles produced either at forward ($$3.1<eta<3.9$$) or backward ($$-3.7<eta<-3.1$$) rapidity in $$d$$$$+$$Au and $$p$$$$+$$$$p$$ collisions at $$sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$$ GeV. The azimuthal angle correlations for particle pairs with this large rapidity gap in the Au-going direction exhibit a ridge-like structure that persists up to $$p_T{approx}6$$ GeV/$$c$$ and which strongly depends on collision centrality, which is a similar characteristic to the hydrodynamical particle flow in A+A collisions. The ridge-like structure is absent in the $$d$$-going direction as well as in $$p$$$$+$$$$p$$ collisions, in the transverse-momentum range studied. The results indicate that the ridge-like structure is shifted in the Au-going direction toward more central collisions, similar to the charged-particle pseudorapidity distributions.

We present measurements of the transverse-momentum dependence of elliptic flow $$v_2$$ for identified pions and (anti)protons at midrapidity ($$|eta|<0.35$$), in 0% - 5% central $$p$$ + Au and $$^3$$He + Au collisions at $$sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}$$ = 200 GeV. When taken together with previously published measurements in $$d$$ + Au collisions at $$sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}$$ = 200 GeV, the results cover a broad range of small-collision-system multiplicities and intrinsic initial geometries. We observe a clear mass-dependent splitting of $$v_2(p_{T})$$ in $$d$$ + Au and $$^3$$He + Au collisions, just as in large nucleus-nucleus ($$A$$ + $$A$$) collisions, and a smaller splitting in $$p$$ + Au collisions. Both hydrodynamic and transport model calculations successfully describe the data at low $$p_T$$ ($$< 1.5$$ GeV/$$c$$), but fail to describe various features at higher $$p_T$$. In all systems, the $$v_2$$ values follow an approximate quark-number scaling as a function of the hadron transverse kinetic energy per constituent quark($$KE_T/n_q$$), which was also seen previously in $$A$$ + $$A$$ collisions.

We present a detailed measurement of charged two-pion correlation functions in 0%-30% centrality $$sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$$ GeV Au$$+$$Au collisions by the PHENIX experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. The data are well described by Bose-Einstein correlation functions stemming from L$'e$vy-stable source distributions. Using a fine transverse momentum binning, we extract the correlation strength parameter $$lambda$$, the L$'e$vy index of stability $$alpha$$ and the L$'e$vy length scale parameter $$R$$ as a function of average transverse mass of the pair $$m_T$$. We find that the positively and the negatively charged pion pairs yield consistent results, and their correlation functions are represented, within uncertainties, by the same L$'e$vy-stable source functions. The $$lambda(m_T)$$ measurements indicate a decrease of the strength of the correlations at low $$m_T$$. The L$'e$vy length scale parameter $$R(m_T)$$ decreases with increasing $$m_T$$, following a hydrodynamically predicted type of scaling behavior. The values of the L$'e$vy index of stability $$alpha$$ are found to be significantly lower than the Gaussian case of $$alpha=2$$, but also significantly larger than the conjectured value that may characterize the critical point of a second-order quark-hadron phase transition.

Recently, multiparticle-correlation measurements of relativistic $$p/d/^3$$He$$+$$Au, $$p$$$$+$$Pb, and even $$p$$$$+$$$$p$$ collisions have shown surprising collective signatures. Here we present beam-energy-scan measurements of 2-, 4-, and 6-particle angular correlations in $$d$$$$+$$Au collisions at $$sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}$$=200, 62.4, 39, and 19.6 GeV. We also present measurements of 2- and 4-particle angular correlations in $$p$$$$+$$Au collisions at $$sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}$$=200 GeV. We find the 4-particle cumulant to be real-valued for $$d$$$$+$$Au collisions at all four energies. We also find that the 4-particle cumulant in $$p$$$$+$$Au has the opposite sign as that in $$d$$$$+$$Au, indicating that the correlations are geometrical and therefore collective in origin. Further we find that the 6-particle cumulant agrees with the 4-particle cumulant in $$d$$$$+$$Au collisions at 200 GeV, which indicates that nonflow effects are subdominant and provides strong evidence of collectivity.

The fraction of $$J/psi$$ mesons which come from B-meson decay, $$textrm{F}_{B{rightarrow}J/psi}$$, is measured for J/$$psi$$ rapidity $$1.2<|y|< 2.2$$ and $$p_T>0$$ in $$p$$+$$p$$ and Cu+Au collisions at $$sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}$$=200 GeV with the PHENIX detector. The extracted fraction is $$textrm{F}_{B{rightarrow}J/psi}$$ = 0.025 $$pm$$ 0.006(stat) $$pm$$ 0.010(syst) for $$p$$+$$p$$ collisions. For Cu+Au collisions, $$textrm{F}_{B{rightarrow}J/psi}$$ is 0.094 $$pm$$ 0.028(stat) $$pm$$ 0.037(syst) in the Au-going direction ($$-2.2<y<-1.2$$) and 0.089 $$pm$$ 0.026(stat) $$pm$$ 0.040(syst) in the Cu-going direction ($$1.2<y<2.2$$). The nuclear modification factor, $$R_{rm CuAu}$$, of B mesons in Cu+Au collisions is consistent with binary scaling of measured yields in $$p$$+$$p$$ at both forward and backward rapidity.

We report a measurement of $$e^+e^-$$ pairs from semileptonic heavy-flavor decays in $$p+p$$ collisions at $$sqrt{s_{NN}}$$ = 200 GeV. The $$e^+e^-$$ pair yield from $$bbar{b}$$ and $$cbar{c}$$ is separated by exploiting a double differential fit done simultaneously in dielectron invariant mass and $$p_T$$. We used three different event generators, ${sc pythia}$, ${sc mc@nlo}$, and ${sc powheg}$, to simulate the $$e^+e^-$$ spectra from $$bbar{b}$$ and $$cbar{c}$$ production. The data can be well described by all three generators within the detector acceptance. However, when using the generators to extrapolate to $$4pi$$, significant differences are observed for the total cross section. These difference are less pronounced for $$bbar{b}$$ than for $$cbar{c}$$. The same model dependence was observed in already published $$d+A$$ data. The $$p+p$$ data are also directly compared with $$d+A$$ data in mass and $$p_T$$, and within the statistical accuracy no nuclear modification is seen.

Dihadron and isolated direct photon-hadron angular correlations are measured in $$p+p$$ collisions at $$sqrt{s}$$ = 510 GeV. Correlations of charged hadrons of $$0.7 < p_T < 10$$ GeV/$$c$$ with $$pi^0$$ mesons of $$4 < p_T < 15$$ GeV/$$c$$ or isolated direct photons of $$7 < p_T < 15$$ GeV/$$c$$ are used to study nonperturbative effects generated by initial-state partonic transverse momentum and final-state transverse momentum from fragmentation. The nonperturbative behavior is characterized by measuring the out-of-plane transverse momentum component $$p_{rm out}$$ perpendicular to the axis of the trigger particle, which is the high-$$p_T$$ direct photon or $$pi^0$$. Nonperturbative evolution effects are extracted from Gaussian fits to the away-side inclusive-charged-hadron yields for different trigger-particle transverse momenta ($$p_{T}^{rm trig}$$). The Gaussian widths and root mean square of $$p_{rm out}$$ are reported as a function of the interaction hard scale $$p_{T}^{rm trig}$$ to investigate possible transverse-momentum-dependent evolution differences between the $$pi^0$$-$$h^pm$$ and direct photon-$$h^{pm}$$ correlations and factorization breaking effects. The widths are found to decrease with $$p_{T}^{rm trig}$$, which indicates that the Collins-Soper-Sterman soft factor is not driving the evolution with the hard scale in nearly back-to-back dihadron and direct photon-hadron production in $$p+p$$ collisions. This behavior is in contrast to Drell-Yan and semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering measurements.

The PHENIX experiment at the BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider has measured second- and third-order Fourier coefficients of the azimuthal distributions of direct photons emitted at midrapidity in Au+Au collisions at $$sqrt{s_{NN}}$$ = 200 GeV for various collision centralities. Combining two different analysis techniques, results were obtained in the transverse momentum range of $$0.4 < p_T < 4.0$$ GeV/$$c$$. At low $$p_T$$ the second-order coefficients, $$v_2$$, are similar to the ones observed in hadrons. Third-order coefficients, $$v_3$$, are nonzero and almost independent of centrality. These new results on $$v_2$$ and $$v_3$$, combined with previously published results on yields, are compared to model calculations that provide yields and asymmetries in the same framework. Those models are challenged to explain simultaneously the observed large yield and large azimuthal anisotropies.

Measurements of anisotropic flow Fourier coefficients ($$v_n$$) for inclusive charged particles and identified hadrons $$pi^{pm}$$, $$K^{pm}$$, $$p$$, and $$bar{p}$$ produced at midrapidity in Cu+Au collisions at $$sqrt{s_{NN}}$$ = 200 GeV are presented. The data were collected in 2012 by the PHENIX experiment at the Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider (RHIC). The particle azimuthal distributions with respect to different-order symmetry planes $$Psi_n$$, for $$n=$$1, 2, and 3 are studied as a function of transverse momentum $$p_T$$ over a broad range of collision centralities. Mass ordering, as expected from hydrodynamic flow, is observed for all three harmonics. The charged-particle results are compared with hydrodynamical and transport model calculations. We also compare these Cu+Au results with those in Cu+Cu and Au+Au collisions at the same $$sqrt{s_{NN}}$$ and find that the $$v_2$$ and $$v_3$$, as a function of transverse momentum, follow a common scaling with $$1/(epsilon_n N_{rm part}^{1/3})$$.
